<p> Meet Max Cady. Max is a psycho, a rapist and a terrorist.
Max is not a nice man. Max is the latest transmogrification of
master mutator ROBERT DE NIRO, and he makes Travis Bickle and
Jake La Motta look like bashful Boy Scouts. De Niro plays the
pumped-up villain in Cape Fear, Martin Scorsese's upcoming
remake of the 1962 classic about an ex-con obsessed with
exacting revenge on the lawyer who sent him to prison. "He's
incessant," says De Niro. "He just keeps coming and coming.
What's terrifying is the idea that you can't stop someone no
matter what you do. He's like the Alien or the Terminator." An
apt analogy, since De Niro is his own special effect. The
mutability of his body is mythical: he gained 60 lbs. to play
LaMotta, 30 lbs. to play Al Capone. For Cady he added layers of
muscle mass. "I feel if you're going to do certain parts you
really have to commit to them all the way to make them special,"
De Niro explains. The tattoos, at least, are fake.
